R&D&i: CDTI EEA GRANTS – Joints-Off | Low-Cost and High-Durable Offshore Foundation

JOINTS-OFF project aims to knowledge generation and the development of new offshore structures, low-cost and high-durable. Reduction of manufacturing costs have been achieved avoiding welded joints in the structure. Tensegrity and minimal surface concepts have been applied to the design of the new jacket. High-durability have been achieved by means of modifications and reformulations on paints (base of acrilic polyurethane) which avoid colonization and growth of algae and crustaceans. This also slows down biocorrosion. The low manufacturing cost intended for the new structure jacket type was obtained applying tensegrity concepts and minimal surfaces, so it was not necessary welded joints between the tubes that compound the structure. The high durability of the structure was achieved modifying the coatings currently used, acrylic polyurethane base, with nontoxic stabilizers, inhibiting the settlement of marine organisms like algae and crustaceans, slowing biocorrosion and while minimizing environmental impact. For the achievement of the previous general goals, the next specific goals were defined:
  • Design of new structure jacket type was obtained applying tensegrity concepts and minimal surfaces, so it was not necessary welded joints between the tubes that compound the structure and leading to a manufacturing cost of 15% at least comparting with a conventional jacket type structure.
  • Development of new non-toxic stabilizers, modifying the coatings currently used with acrylic polyurethane base, inhibiting the settlement of marine organisms like algae and crustaceans, slowing biocorrosion and while minimizing environmental impact. All this with the goal of decreasing at least a 20% the maintenance costs.
  • Validation of the new structure through the test of their hydrodinamic behaviour with in-channel tests of a 1:20 scaled prototype and their behaviour in relation to marine fouling through tests in real marine enviroments.
  • Define the technical and economical feasibility of the new developed solution, including the entire life-cycle of the system (Manufacturing, transport, installation, operation, maintenance and decomissioning.)
